Sophie Angner and Talia Hudson took home the runner-up trophy on Sunday after falling in the women’s doubles final of the Community College division at the 112th annual Ojai Tennis Tournament.
The SBCC duo dropped a 6-0, 7-6 (4) decision to Jessica Ho-Daria Kulbikova of Sierra at Libbey Park.
“I thought we had a great chance to win the second set,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “To make it to the final in a 61-team draw is very impressive. And SBCC got to the doubles semifinals in both men and women.
“No other school can say that.”
Angner was the No. 1 seed in singles and she reached the semifinals. The freshman from Sweden suffered a 6-2, 6-3 setback to Jessica Worring of Ventura on Sunday morning at 8 a.m.
Julianna Bacelar, the top player from Ventura, beat Worring for the title, 6-2, 6-2.
SBCC will send its entire team to the Southern Cal Regional on May 3-5 in Palm Desert. Angner will represent the Vaqueros in singles. The three doubles who qualified are Angner-Hudson, Henrietta Spetz-Megan Thomas and Hannah Erickson-Lindsay Penner.
