Sophie Angner, SBCC’s freshman sensation from Sweden, rolled into the Southern Cal Regional women’s tennis tournament with a resounding win on Friday in the WSC Individual Tournament at Ventura College. Angner beat Jackie Griffin of Bakersfield 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 16.
The Vaqueros had four other players in the Round of 16 but none pulled out a victory. Sonia Landeros of Ventura beat No. 8 seed Talia Hudson 6-3, 6-1; Sevana Zargarian of Glendale downed No. 13 Henrietta Spetz 6-4, 6-0 and Criss Rodriguez of Santa Monica knocked off No. 15 Megan Thomas 6-2, 6-3.
Hannah Erickson defaulted to top-seeded Julianna Bacelar of Ventura.
By reaching the quarterfinals, Angner earned a spot in the Southern Cal Regional on May 3-5 at College of the Desert.
“Sophie played great today,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “Talia, Henrietta and Megan all fought hard.”
With three doubles teams already qualifying for the Regional, Ekola will be taking all six of her starting players to the elite event.
“It’s not very often that your entire team qualifies for the Regional,” she noted. “That says a lot about the quality of our team.”
SBCC’s top doubles duo of Angner and Hudson have been seeded No. 1 for the Ojai Tournament, which starts Thursday and attracts all the top players from Southern California.
