Yonke, Tooley beat back Santa Paula

Bishop Diego hit the road for its first Frontier League game away from home on Friday, coming away with a 4-2 victory over Santa Paula.

JD Yonke pitched a complete game without allowing an earned run and Nolan Tooley went 3-for-3 with three RBI at the plate.

The Cardinals went down twice to Santa Paula but was able to rally both times. The Cardinals (7-2, 2-0) passed the test as the No. 2-ranked team in Division 6.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game today,” said Bishop Diego assistant coach Kai Solin.

Tooley drove in a run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single, which tied the game 1-1. In the sixth, Tooley again erased a lead for Santa Paula with a two-run double.

Yonke improved to 3-0 on the season by allowing single unearned runs in the third and fourth innings.

“He’s been terrific for us all year. He’s got a lot of composure,” Solin said of the senior right-hander.

Aidan Williams scored Bishop’s first run following his triple.

The Cardinals have league games next week against Villanova and Fillmore.
