The Carpinteria boys tennis team beat the defending league champions, Nordhoff Rangers today, 10-8 at home to go 1-0 in league.
Carpinteria’s doubles teams won six of nine sets and defeated defending champion Nordhoff 10-8 in the Frontier League boys tennis opener on Thursday.
“The boys played great in both singles and doubles,” said coach Charles Bryant.
The No. 1 team of Sean Welty/David Harms played exceptionally well, winning their two sets by identical 6-1 scores.
“They do not get paired up that much but did an incredible job together today,” Bryant said.
The No. 2 doubles team of Greg Norton/Tim Goulart scored a come-from-behind 6-4 set win against Nordhoff’s No. 2 team.
In singles, No. 2 Justin Nathanson scored a pivotal point in the first round, beating the Rangers No. 2 player 6-2.
“That point would be critical as their player went on to take his next two sets,” said Bryant.
“We are a blue-collar team that needs to out hustle and out determine the other team and that was evident today,” Bryant said.
Carpinteria is now 2-7 overall and 1-0 in league.
