SBCC was edged by WSC leader Ventura 5-4 on Tuesday in a WSC men’s tennis match at Pershing Park. It marked the second 5-4 win for the Pirates over the Vaqueros this year.
Ventura (10-2, 5-0 WSC) got the fifth point in the last match of the day at No. 3 doubles. SBCC fell to 5-3 and 4-3.
“The guys fought really hard,” said coach Ryan Heinberg. “We laid it all on the court. It couldn’t have been any closer.”
SBCC won the first three singles and Ventura took the next three. After splitting the first two doubles sets, it all came down to No. 3 doubles.
Ventura played its No. 1 singles player, Jonathan Lin, at No. 3 doubles along with No. 4 player Paulo Fernandes. They narrowly beat Sebastian Vestberg and Che Borja 8-6 in the decisive final match.
After a two-week break, the Vaqueros will travel to Glendale on April 5.
