Matthew Bailey, Cody Uhrig and Tristan Lake posted victories on Friday, leading the SBCC men’s track and field team to a second-place finish in WSC No. 2 at Cuesta in San Luis Obispo.
Bailey, a sophomore from Dos Pueblos High, won the 3,000 meters in 8:41.82, the third-fastest time in the state this year. Uhrig captured the 400 in 49.38 (No. 9 in school history) and Lake won the 400 hurdles in 55.67.
Ventura edged SBCC for the team title 130-117 in the five-school competition. Cuesta was third at 111.
Ben Garland was second in the 800 (2:00.05) and 1500 (4:03.67) while Cliff Lekas posted second-place efforts in the 100 (11.22) and 200 (22.38).
“The men really did great,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “A lot of guys chipped in from all over the track and field. It was a true team effort.”
In the women’s meet, SBCC won two individual events and two relays to take fourth with 92 points. Ventura won with 171, followed by Moorpark at 125.
Kate Earle was first in the 110m hurdles (16.49), second in the triple jump and ran a leg on both victorious relays — the 4×100 (50.27) and 4×400 (4:09.52). The 4×100 relay time is No. 6 on the all-time school chart.
Brooke Tavernetti topped the field in the 400 hurdles (1:13.06). Sara Jungersten was third in the 100 (12.89) and 200 (26.05) and also ran on both winning relays.
“Our sprinters and hurdlers came out in force and put a lot of points on the board,” stated Fickerson. “We had a lot of great marks but those ladies really shined.”
