SBCC rebounds from first loss

SBCC bounced back from its first loss to blank San Diego Mesa 9-0 on Thursday in a nonconference women’s tennis match at Pershing Park.

The Vaqueros are 7-1 on the season.

Talia Hudson won the match of the day at No. 1 singles, rallying to win after dropping the first set to Gabby Fortunato 6-3. Hudson fell behind 5-2 in the second set, then captured five straight games and won a tiebreaker 10-8.

“Talia played great, their No. 1 was good,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “It was nice to see us play well after our first loss (to Ventura on Tuesday).”

Henrietta Spetz (7-5, 6-1) and Hannah Erickson (6-3, 7-5) also overcame 5-2 deficits to win by 7-5 scores at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respectively. Erickson and Lindsay Penner stayed unbeaten in doubles (8-0 season record) as did Hudson and Sophie Angner (6-0).

SBCC returns to WSC action on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. home match vs. Bakersfield.
