San Marcos split its games at the Santa Ynez Tournament on Saturday, falling short against Cabrillo 7-6 and beating Bishop Diego 9-2.
The Royals took a 6-1 lead after 3 1/2 inning against Cabrillo. They scored two in the second and four in the top of the fourth. In the second, Angel Mermis doubled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Desirea DeLaCruz and DeLaCruz came home when the Conquistadores threw the ball away.
In the fourth, Lyana Gonzalez hit a bases-loaded single for a RBI, Hannah Johnson followed with a two-run single and Emily Dietz drove in the sixth run with a single.
Cabrillo came back with four runs in the bottom of the fourth with five consecutive singles and a fielder’s choice. The Conquistadores added two more in the bottom of the fifth with one out to end the game.
Tournament games had a 90-minute time limit
Kristen Berlo went the distance for San Marcos and struck out 10. Mermis was 2 for 2 with a double and 2 runs scored. DeLaCruz also scored 2 runs.
San Marcos jumped on Bishop Diego with three runs in the first and second innings.
Berlo hit a two-run triple in the first and she scored on a ground out by Mermis.
Veronica Villarreal drove in two runs with a single in the second inning, and Berlo hit a hard ball that was mishandled by the first baseman, allowing Villarreal to come home for a 6-0 lead.
Bishop scored two in the third inning when Madison Ballard reached first on an error. Diane Sleep followed with a home run.
San Marcos put the game away with three more runs in the fourth. Stephanie Swann singled in Villarreal and Jennifer Barajas belted a pinch-hit two-run double.
Berlo retired Bishop in order in the top of the fifth to win the game. She struck out 13 and had 3 RBIs. Villarreal was 2 for 3 and 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
