San Marcos is now 8-0 after a 25-13, 16-25, 25-23, 25-18 non-league victory over Rio Mesa on Tuesday.
The Royals take their undefeated record into Thursday’s Channel League opener with Dos Pueblos
“We accomplished our goal for our preseason,” said Royals head coach Roger Kuntz, noting that life will get tougher in league play.
Junior middle Kevin Hempy had an efficient night with 10 kills on 14 attempts. Jack Shields had a good match tallying nine kills and seven solo blocks.
Senior Aaron Duke collected 16 digs and five kills in his first start for the Royals. Junior Baker Johnson also received a start in the place of Shane Haushild, who came into the match leading the team in kills but is out with an ankle injury.
Chris Newton provided a spark after the Royals dropped the second set against Rio Mesa. The junior opposite came in and recorded six kills in seven attempts to close out the match.
San Marcos faces Dos Pueblos on Thursday in the league opener for both teams.
