It took the San Marcos boys volleyball team all five sets to defeat Santa Ynez at home on Tuesday evening.
“We rallied up the troops and decided we were not willing to leave the gym without a win tonight,” head coach Roger Kuntz said.
The scores were 25-16, 25-19, 22-25, 24-26, 15-6.
Jack Shields led the Royals on offense with 13 kills in 17 attempts (.706). His defense was also outstanding and he finished the game with six solo blocks.
Shane Hauschild and Aaron Duke also helped out with good hitting nights. Hauschild had 10 kills and Duke had seven.
San Marcos was poised and executed their game plan in the first two sets, but the Pirates brought renewed energy in the third and fourth games. Several hitting errors kept Santa Ynez close in those sets, and the visitors were able to surge to victory.
However, the Royals refused to lose and flipped the momentum with a dominating performance in the last game to earn a victory.
San Marcos (3-0) will play on Thursday at home against Arcadia.
