Poindexter, Scarvelis, Zerrenner shine at Easter Relays

Stamatia Scarvelis and Addi Zerrenner of Dos Pueblos, and Bishop Diego’s Nicole Poindexter won their respective individual events on Saturday at the 74th Easter Relays track and field meet at La Playa Stadium.

Scarvelis threw 43-11.5 to capture the girls shot put and remain undefeated on the season. The sophomore’s mark ranks second in the state behind Alemany freshman Nia Britt’s 48-9.

“I’m pretty happy with it,” Scarvelis said of her winning mark. “At least I’m being consistent.”

She said her best throws have come during warm-ups before the competition.

“I have to transfer that to the meet, where it actually counts,” she said.

In the discus, Scarvelis took third with a mark of 122-01.

Zerrenner won the 3000 meters in 10:18.46.

“Her time would’ve also been a personal best at the 3200,” said coach Leslie Wiggins Roth.

Jessica Meyers of Santa Ynez was second (10:27.46) and DP;s Elaine McClure (10:45.01) took third.

Poindexter went 17-2.25 to capture the girls long jump. Her mark puts her in the top 50 in the state. The Bishop Diego senior also finished a surprising second place in the 100 meters, edged out by Tamara Williams of Nevada-Centennial. Williams was clocked in 12.13 seconds and Poindexter in 12.15.

“I felt I did really well,” said Poindexter, the only representative from Bishop. “I was running against girls that were very good. It’s not really my event but I think I did really well.”

Her cousin, Niema Poindexter of Dos Pueblos, finished second in the triple jump at 34-5.75.

Bryan Fernandez of Dos Pueblos was runner-up in the boys 3000 in 8:49.07. Joe Strong cleared a personal best of 13-6 to earn third place in the shot put and Waiman Meinhold got second in the triple jump at 42-7.25.

Centennial enjoyed a good meet, placing in the top three in several events. Its boys 4×800 team posted an impressive winning time of 7:49.

Centennial also won the boys 4×200 relay (1:33.75), girls distance medley (12:50.63), sprint medley (1:53.74), 4×200 (1:48.28) and 4×100 (49.36) relays.

San Marcos came in second in the boys 4×400 relay in 3:38.52.

Santa Barbara (1:33.82) finished second and Carpinteria (1:33.95) took third in the boys 4×200.

In other highlights, Durrell McDonald of Golden Valley cleared 6-10 in the boys high jump to move into a tie for the top mark in the state; Arroyo Grande’s Garrett Weinreich, the state leader in the boy shot put, won the event at 56-5.50.
