James Morton and Jonathan Collins couldn’t out-do each other, but out-did everyone else on Thursday at the Alisal Ranch Course in Santa Ynez to lead Santa Barbara High’s golf team to a victory.
Collins and Morton were both at 6-over 78 to earn co-medalist honors and the Dons were a combined 408, which was 11-strokes better than second-place finisher Clovis West.
Dos Pueblos finished in third place with a 424 and San Luis Obispo was fourth with 436. The host team Santa Ynez placed last because of two disqualifications.
“Wind was blowing very hard all day and players struggled around a very tight golf course,” said Dons head coach James Bedard. “Only 4 players shot better than 80 and birdies were very hard to come by.”
Collins’ round was highlighted by an eagle on the tenth hole and Morton kept his score to 38 on the back nine to complete his round.
Santa Barbara’s Rito Armenta was three shots off the leaders. Spencer Mikles’ 85 and Sean Searls’ 86 also counted for Santa Barbara.
The Dons compete again on Monday in a dual-match with West Ranch at Rancho San Marcos.
