Carpinteria’s No. 3 doubles team of Cole Menegon and Matt Jansen pulled out a dramatic comeback win against Santa Clara’s No. 1 team, and that made the difference for the Warriors in a Frontier League match on Thursday.
Menegon-Jansen’s 7-5 victory not only gave Carpinteria its ninth set win of the day, it also gave the Warriors the edge in games. They won the match 73-61 after a 9-9 tie in sets.
Menegon-Jansen swept their three sets. Jonathan Cleek-Colin Nathanson and Greg Norton-Tim Goulart each went 2-1.
In singles, coach Charles Bryant said Sammy Gutierrez played his best match of the year.
“All three of our league matches have been as close as you can get and we will have to play very solid tennis in our remaining six league matches,” Bryant said. “Although we have improved a ton, I believe our best tennis is still ahead of us.”
Carpinteria improves to 4-7 overall and 3-0 in league.
