Tristan Lake captured the 400-meter hurdles by more than three seconds on Friday and Cody Uhrig won the 400 meters, leading the SBCC men’s track and field team to a fourth-place finish in WSC No. 1 at Ventura.
The Vaquero men finished fourth in the six-team field with 81 points. Canyons edged Bakersfield 147-134 for first place. In the women’s meet, SBCC posted five second-place finishes and took fifth with 64 points. Canyons won with 180 points.
The winning team gets six points added to their score at the WSC Championships with second place getting five, third place getting four, etc.
Lake, a freshman from San Marcos High, ran the 10th-fastest time in school history in the 400 hurdles with a 55.29 clocking. He beat the runner-up, teammate German Hernandez, by 3.08 seconds.
Uhrig, a freshman from Santa Ynez High, took the 400 in 49.84.
Ben Garland was second in the 3000 (8:48.34) and Nick Smith took second in the long jump (22-2½). Matthew Bailey was third in the 1500 (4:00.94).
“The men had some real great performances,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “Big props go out to Matthew Bailey for pushing the pace hard against two of the best runners in the state in the 1500m and making them earn their win.”
Kaytee Krivulka recorded the 2nd-best hammer throw in SBCC women’s history with a toss of 37.51 meters (123 feet, 1 inch). She finished third, as did Kate Earle in the triple jump (10.31 meters, No. 10 all time); Kelly Mayer (3000, 11:43.96) and Cecilia Instebo (1500, 4:58.38).
Zoe Davis took second in the shot put with a heave of 11.73m (38 feet, 6 inches).
“The women had a solid day, not great, but definitely not bad,” stated Fickerson. “The scoring in these meets rewards teams with really strong athletes that can win lots of events. Our strength will be in our depth which will help us in a larger meet like conference championships.
“This was another good step in the right direction.”
