Harvard-Westlake hits Santa Barbara with first loss

Santa Barbara High’s undefeated season was put to bed on Saturday at Harvard-Westlake, as one of Southern California’s top teams pounded the Dons 14-1.

The Dons were 5-0 coming into the game but hadn’t yet faced a team of the Wolverines’ caliber. Harvard-Westlake is No. 2 on the current L.A. Times’ Top-25 in the Southland.

The Wolverines belted out 20 hits on their way to a season-high 14 runs. Harvard-Westlake showed its versatility, as five of its hits were bunts and two were home runs. Arden Pabst connected for a two-run blast in the fifth and Joe Corrigan hit a solo shot in the sixth.

Much of the damage came in an 8-run fifth for Harvard-Westlake.

Santa Barbara didn’t score its run until the seventh inning, when Khalil Pipersburg knocked in Conner McManigal.

Brandon Deere recorded the win for the Wolverines. Hans Hansen entered the game in the fifth and finished the game.

The Dons return home for their next game on Tuesday against Buena in the Channel League opener for both teams.
