MONTEREY PARK – The UCSB men’s swim team had another busy evening at East Los Angeles College as they completed the third day of action at the Pac-12 Swimming Championships.
Chris Peterson, Wade Allen, Garrett Thompson and Kevin Ferguson’s new school record in the 200 freestyle relay, which they set during a time trial, highlighted the evening. The team touched the wall in 1:17.87, which beats out the previous record by .12 seconds.
Friday’s finals opened with the 400 individual medley. Randy Aakhus qualified for the event’s final with a prelims time of 3:48.08, which is an NCAA ‘B’ cut. He finished seventh in the final (3:51.06).
Evan Simoni took 12th after touching the wall in 3:53.74, he swam the morning’s prelims in 3:52.61, which is an NCAA ‘B’ cut. Ryan Garcia finished 18th (3:58.04) and Andrew Barmann took 23rd with a time of 4:02.48 (4:02.35 prelims).
In the 100 butterfly, Wade Allen won the ‘B’ final in 47.34 seconds, which is .11 seconds off of Pat Cary’s school record in the event. Dylan Templeton took 19th in 49.18 seconds and Bob Hwang touched 20th in 49.26 seconds.
Garrett Thompson was the Gauchos’ top finisher in the 200 free, taking 13th with a time of 1:36.86. Andrew Dossa won the ‘C’ final and took 17th overall after touching in 1:38.15. Alex Campbell took 24th with his time of 1:40.24 (1:38.69 prelims).
The final individual event of the evening was the 100 breaststroke. Chris Leon tied for the top finish in the ‘C’ final, taking 17th overall in 56.73 seconds. Tyler Jean placed 19th in 56.83.
UCSB closed out the day with a sixth-place finish in the 400 medley relay. The team of Aakhus, Evan Simoni, Dylan Templeton and Steven Ewoldt recorded a time of 3:19.45.
After three days of action, UCSB is in seventh place with 164.5 points. The Gauchos trail sixth-place Arizona State by 11 points. Stanford continues to lead the pack with 623.5 total points.
The Gauchos will conclude action at the 2012 Pac-12 Swimming Championships on Saturday. The final events to be swum will be the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
