Bri Portese went 2-4 with four RBIs on Tuesday but SBCC couldn’t overcome seven errors in a 10-5 nonconference softball loss at Bakersfield.
Mariah Coyazo was 2-3 with three runs for the Vaqueros (7-8), who were playing their sixth game in five days. They won the Golden West Invitational last weekend.
Kiersty Briner had a hit, two walks and scored twice for Santa Barbara.
Bakersfield, ranked No. 7 in Southern Cal, improved to 14-4. SBCC went ahead 2-0 in the third but the Renegades came back with three in the bottom half, thanks to three errors. The Vaqueros tied it at 3-3 in the fourth but Bakersfield pulled away with five runs in their next two at-bats.
SBCC opens defense of its WSC Gold Division title on Thursday with a 2:30 p.m. game at Hancock.
