Santa Barbara took two sets off Cate’s No. 1 player Blake Mackall, and the Dons opened their boys tennis season with an impressive 14-4 victory over the Rams on Wednesday.
“It was a good start to the season for Santa Barbara,” coach Greg Tebbe said. “Great effort, sportsmanship, and good, competitive tennis from both teams.”
Nico Pollero went 2-0 at the No. 1 singles for the Dons and Graham Maassen won three sets at No. 3.
Mackall, a CIF qualifier last season, went 1-2 for the Rams (0-2).
“We swept the first two rounds and we were able to substitute most of the players in the third round, which allowed many first-year players to get some quality match experience,” said Tebbe.
The Dons will get a good early test this weekend when they play at the California High School Championships in Fresno.
