Nic Mon tallied 39 kills as the Bishop Diego boys volleyball team went 2-4 to finish up play at the San Luis Obispo SLO Town Tournament on Saturday.
The Cardinals picked up wins over Templeton and Oxnard in the Bronze Division, and started to find a rhythm as the day went on.
“We were erratic in this tournament. We missed too many serves and hit too many balls out,” said coach Jason Donnelly. “I was waiting to see some improvement and I think in our final two matches we really started to see it.”
Down to one setter due to SAT testing, Brandon Gonzalez ran the offense with a strong effort all day, tallying four aces with 12 digs. Patrick Schlesselman hit for a .500 average at the middle blocker spot and senior Casey Connelly played the best back-row volleyball of his varsity career.
“Casey came in and was vocal and aggressive, which was great to see,” said Donnelly. “We don’t have any guys that play volleyball at other times during the year, so we’re being patient as we get going. We expect to be a playoff team.”
The Cardinals (0-2) play important league matches this week, heading to Fillmore on Tuesday before hosting Malibu on Thursday.
