Bishop Diego’s boys volleyball team had lost 8-1 leads in both the third and fourth sets, but they weren’t about to let the match slip away.
Trailing 6-1 in the final frame, the Cardinals stormed back to beat Mission Prep 15-13 in the fifth set to pick up a victory at The Brickhouse on Friday. Patrick Schlesselmann went on a match-saving service run and Nic Mon blasted one of his 24 kills before Brandon Gonzalez ended things on an ace.
The Cardinals improved to 3-7 on the season in the non-league matchup.
“We lost a 5-set match earlier to Carpinteria, so it was great for our guys to grind one out and pick up a win here,” said coach Jason Donnelly.
Michael Winnewisser added seven kills in the middle and Casey Conneely had his best match of the season in the back row, according to Donnelly. The Cardinals play at Oaks Christian in a critical Tri-Valley League matchup on Tuesday.
