A draw with Cabrillo part of Warriors’ day

Carpinteria faced Cabrillo and Morro Bay at Saturday’s Santa Ynez Tournament, falling to the Pirates 3-2 after having to settle on a 2-2 tie with the Conquistadores in the morning game.

In order to keep schedule, there are no extra-inning games at the round-robin tournament.

Cabrillo took a 1-0 lead in the third inning but the Warriors gained the advantage in the next inning with two runs. Elena Schneider tripled in Tatiana Verdugo, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Galsterer.

The Warriors led 2-1 until Cabrillo tied it in the sixth.

“It kind of felt like you actually lost the game because your expectation is to win the game,” said Warriors head coach Henry Gonzales. “We talked about staying on the positive side of it.”

Carpinteria met Morro Bay in its next game and fell behind 3-0 after three innings. None of the Pirates’ runs were earned as the Warriors shot themselves in the foot with four errors.

Carpinteria came back in the fourth on a two-run single by Dakota Wilcox. The Warriors had three baserunners reach third base after that but no farther. Erin Saito went 2-4 in the game.

“We just couldn’t get that one hit,” Gonzales said.

Catalina Maldonado pitched both games for Carpinteria and allowed only one earned run. Maldonado didn’t allow a walk.

The Warriors’ next game is on Tuesday against Santa Paula. That game is part of the Pacific View Challenge.
