Tim Leary went three for five at the plate as Westmont Baseball (2-2-1) posted a 6-1 win over host Menlo on Friday afternoon. Starter Torin Shaikh pitched five innings giving up just one unearned run on four hits. Shaikh struck out five and walked two.
Freshman Taylor Martin replaced Shaikh on the mound and gave the Warriors two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. Mitch Crocker pitched the final two innings without giving up a run or hit.
The Warriors started off the game by scoring twice in the top of the first. David Pennington received a lead-off walk and J.J. Turbin was hit by a pitch. One out later, Tim Leary singled to right to load the bases. After William Barring stuck out, Pennington scored on a wild pitch while Turbin and Leary moved advanced one base. Brandon Gildea then singled to left to drive in Turbin.
Westmont added two more runs in the top of the fourth. With one away, Jarrett Rouse reached on a error then advanced to second on a single by Brent Fukushima. Pennington drove in Rouse with a single to left that advanced Fukushima to third. Fukushima then scored on a single by Turbin.
In the fifth inning, a two-out walk to Thomas Hocutt led to a 5-0 Warrior lead. After Hocutt stole second base, Roused singled to right center to drive in the first baseman.
After Menlo scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth, the Warriors added a sixth run on an RBI-double by Tim Leary that drove in Pennington.
The Warriors continue their Bay Area road trip with two games tomorrow. At eleven o’clock they will take on Cal State East Bay at Menlo-Atherton High School. Then at 2:30, Westmont and Azusa Pacific will match up in a non-Golden State Athletic Conference game at Menlo College.
