Sophie Angner posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, helping SBCC to an 8-1 victory at Reedley in the Vaqueros’ season opener. Angner is a freshman from Sweden.
The Vaqueros won nine of 12 singles sets and went 3-0 in doubles against Reedley, which reached the Northern Cal final last year.
“They were very deep but we’re deep also,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “This was a big win. Sophie played great. I think she’s one to watch this year.”
In the No. 5 singles match, SBCC freshman Hannah Erickson prevailed 5-7, 7-5 (10-8 tiebreaker) over Amanda Bukilica. A third set wasn’t played because the match had been decided.
The Vaqueros will play at Fresno City on Friday at 1 p.m., then complete their three-game Northern California swing at Sequoias on Saturday at 11 a.m.
