Despite missing its No. 1 singles player on Friday, SBCC didn’t miss a beat in a 6-3 women’s tennis victory over powerhouse Grossmont at Pershing Park.
The Vaqueros remained undefeated at 4-0. Grossmont, which has won 11 state titles, was playing its season opener.
Sophie Angner, the Vaqueros No. 1 player from Sweden, didn’t play singles due to illness. She won her doubles match with Talia Hudson 8-2.
“Everyone had to move up a spot in singles and they all stepped up,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “Lindsay Penner really fought hard to pull out a victory at No. 5.”
Hudson prevailed in No. 1 singles 7-5, 6-3 while Penner won her match 6-4, 7-5.
The three doubles matches were played first and SBCC swept the doubles for the fourth straight match.
Santa Barbara hosts San Diego City on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
