A seven-minute scoreless stretch in the first half proved costly for SBCC on Saturday and the Vaqueros went on to drop a 93-66 decision to L.A. Pierce in their men’s basketball season finale at the Sports Pavilion.
The Brahmas broke open a tight game with a 16-0 run that produced a 44-23 lead with 1:52 to go in the first half. Pierce (7-13, 5-5 WSC North) outshot the home team 54 to 32 percent while taking a 48-27 halftime lead.
The Vaqueros (4-23, 1-11) committed 15 of their 24 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Scott Burrows and Ricky Braun, playing their final games for SBCC, led the way with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Tony Williams had 10 points off the bench and Braun had five rebounds.
“We played a very poor first half,” said coach Morris Hodges. “Our turnovers fueled some of their fast-break opportunities. Every time you turn it over, that’s a shot attempt you don’t get.”
The Vaqueros were outrebounded 41-35. Pierce had great scoring balance with six players between 12 and 17.
“Their quickness gave us some problems,” said Hodges. “We played hard in the second half but they shot it well all night.”
The Brahmas won the shooting battle 55 to 38 percent and hit 5-12 from 3-point country. The Vaqueros were 7-25 on treys.
