SBCC dropped a wild 11-10 game to Glendale in its softball season opener on Saturday at the Mt. SAC Tournament. In a night game, the Vaqueros led Mt. San Antonio 2-0 before the Mounties rallied for a 10-2 victory.
Santa Barbara outhit Glendale 9-5 in the opener but commited five errors and left 10 runners on base. SBCC trailed 7-1 after three innings, then grabbed a 9-7 lead in the top of the fifth.
“We only have one returning player (Mariah Coyazo) and this team has great potential,” said coach Paula Congleton. “Alyse Harris pitched well and Lauren Larabell was great behind the plate.”
Brianna Portese went 3-4 with five RBIs in the first game and Bryn Thompson went 2-4. The Vaqueros scored five in the fourth with Emilee Bachmann and Portese delivering two-run singles. They added three more in the fifth to go ahead 9-7.
Three Mt. SAC pitchers held SBCC to three hits. The Vaqueros gave up a pair of homers in each contest.
Santa Barbara returns to action on Feb. 11 at the Cypress Tournament vs. Cypress and Canyons.
