Vaquero offense dries up in double header

The first inning was unkind to SBCC on Saturday as the Vaqueros suffered two losses at the Cypress Softball Tournament. They lost to No. 1-ranked and defending state champ Cypress 8-1 and then fell to Canyons 8-0 in a game shortened to five innings by the run rule.

Santa Barbara (0-4) struck first in the opener as Samantha Cabada led off with a triple and scored on Bryn Thompson’s single. Cypress answered with five runs in the first and the Vaqueros didn’t score again in 10 innings over two games.

“We scored an early run and I think my players thought that might be enough,” said coach Paula Congleton. “Then we only had four hits the rest of the way with 12 fly-ball outs.”

Canyons tallied seven runs in the top of the first and rapped out 12 hits for the game. SBCC had six hits in each game but four errors in the opener led to five unearned runs.

Thompson went 2-for-3 in the second game.

The Vaqueros make their home debut on Tuesday against L.A. Mission at 2:30 p.m.
