SBCC posted one of the biggest women’s tennis wins in years on Thursday when the Vaqueros beat Santa Monica 6-3 in their WSC opener on the road.
Santa Monica won the state championships last year with a 17-0 record. The Corsairs have captured the last two WSC titles with a perfect 20-0 record. Santa Barbara finished second each time with an 8-2 record.
The Vaqueros improved to 6-0 despite missing their top player, Sophie Angner, who has an injury.
“For us to be able to win without our No. 1 player, that shows the depth of our team,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “We had to move everyone up a spot. I’m very happy with our performance.”
Megan Thomas, Hannah Erickson, Lindsay Penner and Stephanie Conliffe all won in straight sets in singles. The Vaqueros are 17-1 in doubles after dropping their first set of the year.
SBCC will host Ventura on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
