UCSB’s baseball team returns home this weekend with a four-game winning streak and four hitters batting over .400 to host Loyola Marymount in a weekend series at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
After losing a season-opening series to Oregon State, the Gauchos have rebounded and are 5-3 overall in the early season under new head coach Andrew Checketts.
First pitch for Friday’s game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s games begin at 1 p.m.
Greg Mahle (.471), Lance Roenicke (.419), Brett Vertigan (.417) and Brandon Trinkwon (.400) are leading an offense that has averaged 4.5 runs per game during the winning streak.
In a 7-3 win over Fresno State on Tuesday, those hitters combined for 12 of UCSB’s 14 hits, five of the team’s seven RBI and all seven of the Gauchos’ runs.
The pitching staff has been equally effective, holding opposing bats to six runs combined in the last four games. The Gauchos finished the season with a team ERA of 3.64 last season, their lowest since 1984.
In comparison, LMU comes into the series having lost five straight. Loyola holds a 2-6 record and most recently lost to Big West favorite Cal State Fullerton 6-2. Before that, Cal Poly swept them in four games.
