UCSB softball suffered a pair of tough losses on Friday, the opening day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic. The Gauchos (1-7) fell, 7-1, to Boise State (5-1) before being shutout by Oregon State, 6-0, in the following game at the USD Softball Complex.
In the first inning of game one, the Broncos were able to load the bases with two outs before Kelly Sweeney drew a walk to send Christina Capobianco home for an unearned run. They loaded the bases again at the top of the second, setting the table for Capobianco, who hit a grand slam to give Boise State an early 5-0 lead.
At the top of the fourth, Tara Glover drove in Kellie Caplan with a one-out double to center field and then came home on the same play following the third Gaucho error of the game.
In the fifth inning, the Gauchos were able to get on the scoreboard. Lauren Boser led off with a single to right center field and McKenzie Kane followed with a base hit of her own. Brooke Putich then grounded out to the shortstop, allowing both base runners to advance. One out later, Kathryn Pilpil hit a single through the right side, sending Boser home. The run would be the first and only during the day for the Gauchos, as they fell, 7-1.
UCSB out-hit the Broncos in the loss, 8-7, but left seven of its runners stranded and committed four errors on defense.
In the circle, Shelby Wisdom (1-3) suffered the loss after tossing the complete game. She allowed seven runs – five earned – on seven hits while walking three and striking out five. At the plate, Kane led the team, going 2-for-3.
Oregon State was also able to jump on the Gauchos early, scoring a run at the top of the first off of a two-out single to right field by Lea Cavestany.
In the third, the Beavers tacked on two more runs following a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Paige Hall. With two outs and two runners on during the next inning, a Gaucho error allowed Hannah Bosuka to reach first and Madison Bundy to score. A single from Elizabeth Santana sent home two more unearned Beaver runs on the following play to push the lead to 6-0.
Oregon State pitchers Marina Demore (2-1) and Aryn Feickert combined for the shutout and limited UCSB to five hits. DeJanee Moore led the Gaucho offensive effort, going 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
Andriana Collins (0-4) pitched the entire game and allowed six runs – three earned – on nine hits. She walked a pair and struck out three.
UCSB will continue action at the Campbell/Cartier Classic on Saturday when it faces No. 9/7 Washington at 11:30 am and Notre Dame at 6 pm. The latter game will be played at San Diego State.
