Westmont senior Adam Thompkins tallied 4,939 points to win the Azusa Pacific Indoor Heptathlon and establish himself as one of the top multi-event contenders in the NAIA. Thompkins beat out six Azusa Pacific competitors including Matt Rau who finished with 4,702 points.
“Adam established himself as one of the top-five competitors in the NAIA,” said Westmont head coach Russell Smelley. “It was an outstanding performance.”
Thompkins placed second in the 60 meters (7.16), third in the long jump (6.45 meters), fifth in the shot put (11.12 meters), first in the high jump (1.84 meters), second in the 60 meter hurdles (8.72), first in the pole vault (4.05 meters) and third in the 1000 meters (2:49.25).
Placing second in the women’s one mile run and earning an automatic qualification to the NAIA Indoor National Championships was senior Kate Stuart.
“Kate ran a beautiful race,” said Smelley. “She did not have a bad lap.”
Stuart posted a time of 5:02.52, beating the automatic qualification time by over eight seconds and establishing a new school record. The previous record of 5:05.12 was set by Christa Fitzgerald on 1999.
The women’s 4×800 meter relay team of Amber Collier, Cherne Corinne, Heidi Nichols and Theresa Nealon finished third in a time of 9:52.0 claiming a provisional qualification mark.
