The San Marcos boys volleyball team defeated Oxnard in consecutive sets to start the season.
The scores were 25-22, 25-8 and 25-14.
The Royals struggled at the beginning of Tuesday night’s match but settled in during the second and third sets.
“We were very nervous in our first game and that kind of showed,” head coach Roger Kuntz said.
The team was led by middle blockers Kevin Hempy and Jack Shields. Hempy finished with six kills while Shields had five.
San Marcos also benefitted from the youthful energy brought by their three starting sophomores: Baker Johnson, Shane Hauschild and Christian Widmer.
The Royals (1-0) will continue their season on Thursday at home against Arroyo Grande.
