The San Marcos girls soccer team faced a tough matchup at Arcadia, and lost 2-1 in a tightly contested game.
“It was really the best soccer the girls have played all season,” Royals head coach Macie Berlin said.
San Marcos finished in third place in the Channel League with a 2-4-2 record. As the wild card in the CIF Division II playoffs, the Royals faced Acradia — the winners of the Pacific League.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair and ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
In the second half, the Royals were victims of two unfortunate mistakes that led to goals. The first was a yellow-card worthy offense that led to a penalty kick, which the home team converted. The second error was an own goal that gave the Apaches a 2-0 lead.
With the season on the line, Emily Allen unleashed a pinpoint cross to Kaitlin Saperstein and the Royals cut Acradia’s lead in half with ten minutes remaining the in game.
But a comeback was not in the cards for San Marcos, and the 2-1 final score meant the season was at its end.
“I’m so proud of those girls,” Berlin said. “They played their hearts out and brought everything they had and left in on the field.”
