Lacey Gonzalez scored on a fastbreak with 33 seconds left and Elizabeth Beebe made a key steal with 10 seconds to go, helping Providence Hall hold off Cate 36-32 in a non-league girl basketball game on Wednesday.
A 3-pointer by Cate’s Lanea Pearson to within one point, 33-32. But Gonzalez responded with her basket. Gonzalez was fouled after Beebe’s steal and sank one free throw for the final score.
“Our energy won the game for us,” said Providence Hall assistant coach Andrea Trader. “We were composed and confident at the end.”
Gonzalez scored nine points, Sydney Hedges added eight and Beebe seven for the Lions, who improve to 12-5.
Brittany Newsome scored eight point and grabbed 10 rebounds for Cate (5-8). Pearson tallied six points on a pair of 3-pointers that got the Rams back in the game, and Danielle Grey added six points and grabbed six rebounds.
“I thought we fought as hard as we could. They’re a good team,” Cate coach Jay Dorion said. “It was a great game on our part.”
