The Laguna Blanca girls soccer team scored two goals in the last five minutes of its game against the Dunn School to earn a 3-0 victory and the Condor League championship.
Going into Friday’s game, the Owls needed only a tie to take first place in league.
McKenzie Scarborough started the scoring in the 25th minute by winning the ball off a Dunn defender and dribbling past the goalkeeper before firing a shot into an empty net.
The game stayed at 1-0 for nearly the entire match before Becca Braly went on a breakaway and calmly finished to give the Owls a 2-0 lead in the 75th minute. Just moments later, Tiana Bonn went on a breakaway of her own and, just as Braly had done, cooly placed the ball in the corner of the goal.
The two goals took pressure off the Laguna Blanca defense which had been superb the entire game. Goalkeeper Mitsi Gamble had a few crucial saves and Fiona Jessup kept the defense focused and coordinated.
“Each time they threatened, she was in the right place to steal the ball or knock it out,” head coach Kevin Shertzer said about his star defender.
The Owls finished with a 5-1 league record and will advance to the postseason.
