Tim Leary pounded two home runs over the left field fence as Westmont Baseball defeated the Hustlin’ Owls of Oregon Tech 4-1 in the first of two games on Monday. In the second game, Oregon Tech picked up a 5-2 victory in the second game to avoid a four-game sweep. Both games were seven innings long.
Leary led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run that put the Warriors up 1-0. Oregon Tech, however, scored in the top of the third and the score remained tied at 1-1 until the bottom of the sixth.
Adam Dickinson, pinch hitting for Brent Fukushima, led off the sixth inning and was hit by a pitch. Fukushima re-entered the game and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by William Barring. When J.J. Turbin ground out to second, Fukushima advanced to third base. David Pennington then reached on an error by the pitcher, brining Leary to the plate. Leary cleared the left field fence to give the Warriors the win.
Daniel Cabuling started on the mound for the Warriors in the early game. He pitched five innings allowing just one run on two hits. However, Cabuling left the game with the score still tied, so the win was awarded to reliever Mitch Crocker who pitched the sixth inning and faced the minimum number of batters. Michael Kwan did the same in the ninth inning and picked up the save.
Leary took the mound at the start of the second game, but gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits in three innings of work. He was charged with the loss. Crocker took over pitching duties in the fourth inning and allowed one run on two hits in four innings of work.
On Thursday, Westmont will begin Golden State Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader at Fresno Pacific beginning at 2:00 p.m. The same two teams will play a doubleheader at Westmont on Saturday, February 25. First pitch in the second twin-bill is at 11:00 a.m.
