Carpinteria was in striking distance of overtaking Villanova Prep in Wednesday’s Frontier League boys basketball, but the Wildcats knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and their 6-4 forward hit three straight shots to help them beat the Warriors 59-50.
Carpinteria trailed by two in the third quarter when Brad David hit back-to-back treys to keep the Warriors at bay.
Carpinteria kept battling in the fourth quarter, but Villnova’s Sean Rothfuss got hot and hit three straight shots to secure the win for the Wildcats.
Marcus Hutchinson scored 17 points and Andrew Sova added 12 for the Warriors (2-13, 1-5).
Coach Johnny Ward praised the play of sophomore Duncan Gordon who battled for rebounds against the taller Wildcats.
Connor Placial led the Wildcats with 22 points and Rothfuss and 12.
