Cate took an early lead against Vasquez on Saturday only to give up a series of quick goals that led to a 4-3 defeat in a non-league girls soccer match.
Lindsay Nelson gave Cate a 1-0 lead in the first half but Vasquez answered with three goals in a seven-minute period to grab a commanding 3-1 lead at halftime.
Annie Weis trimmed Vasquez’s lead to 3-2 in the 51st minute. The game remained a one-goal contest until Vasquez pushed its lead back to two with a goal in the 70th minute. Weis scored again late but the Rams could not come all the way back.
“We were a better team in the second half and it showed in the time of possession and more purposeful marking and defense,” explained Rams head coach Lisa Holmes.
“It was good for us to face a division 5 team and get a sense of the level of play that we must maintain to take our game up a notch.”
Cate plays again on Wednesday in a Condor League game at Dunn.
