Two goals from Catharine Torres started a trend for Carpinteria’s girls soccer team on Saturday, as the Warriors kept adding on in a 5-0 non-league win over Cate.
Torres scored the first two goals for the Warriors, who were playing in their first game of 2012.
After Torres gave Carpinteria a 2-0 lead, Giselle Estrada, Jazmine Montes De Oca, and Monica Garcia made it 5-0 with goals of their own.
“I think we finally just wore them down a little bit,” said Warriors head coach Lucy Carleton.
On the defensive side, Carpinteria recorded the shut out. Sally Lamb and Tania Arroyo split time in the net for the Warriors.
“I had the Benitez sisters back there playing defense for me,” Carleton explained, noting the sisters’ ability to hold off their opponents’ attacking players.
Shirley Benitez is a senior and Alexa Benitez is a freshman.
“It was a nice way to start off the new year,” Carleton said.
Carpinteria moves on to their Frontier League opener on Tuesday against Bishop Diego. The match starts at 5 p.m. in Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium.
