Solano adds to Charger firepower on wrestling mat

Yaskin Solano of Dos Pueblos was so amped to win against San Marcos he almost yanked opponent Robert Orosco’s arm out of its socket and was given a warning by the referee for unnecessary roughness.

The addition of Solano, who transferred from San Marcos after his family moved to Goleta, strengthened an already potent DP squad.

The senior scored a couple of two-point takedowns in the second period against his former Royals teammate and won a tough 11-4 decision over Orosco in the 182-pound weight class.

“That was the match of the night,” DP coach Anthony Califano said after the Chargers’ 76-0 win in a Channel League dual meet at Sovine Gym.

Solano was in position to pin Orosco near the end of the second quarter, but the San Marcos wrestler was saved by the buzzer.

“There was no love lost between those guys. They wrestled each other every day in practice,” said Califano.

“I wanted to impress and I wanted to do what I do best and I managed to do that, so it was a good feeling to come back and do that to the school I came from,” Solano said “There was some animosity, so it was nice.”

Califano said wrestling has helped turn Solano’s life around, and he has high expectations for a guy who’s in only his second year in the sport. He took third in the Channel League last season, and the longtime DP coach feels Solano has the potential to reach the state meet.

DP's Nico Martinez built an 8-2 lead before pinning William Hewes of San Marcos.

Returning Channel League champion Chad Lampe is happy to have Solano on the squad

“He’s brought hard work, determination, everything we need on the team to push it to the top level,” said Lampe.

In the closest match of the night, Malcolm Cellard-Farrell scored five points in the second period to rally from a 4-0 deficit against Francisco Ramirez and held on for a 5-4 decision.

The surprise match of the night was in the heavyweight class. Califano didn’t have a wrestler and said he thought about forfeiting the match, but his assistant coaches and former DP wrestling great and honorary team captain Mike Yamasaki convinced him to put 195-pound senior Andy Garcia against San Marcos’ Jonathan Nateras.

Outweighed by nearly 50 pounds, Garcia managed to escape from a headlock, got Nateras off balance and pinned him with 58 seconds left in the first period.

“He’s a tough kid. He goes up two weight classes and gets the pin. That was exciting for everybody,” said Califano.

Even though the Royals didn’t win a match (they forfeited in six weight classes), Califano said they gave a good effort.

“I thought they put it on the line out there and I thought they did a good job,” he said. “The effort was there on their part, but the experience, maybe not.”
