The Carpinteria High girls basketball team played without leading scorer Julie Cullins and lost starter Bethany Lugo to muscle cramps in the first half of its game at Nordhoff, which ended in 50-37 loss.
Elena Schneider and Erin Saito took center stage offensivesly as Scheider put up 16 points and Saito scored 10. Both players grabbed seven rebounds as well.
The Warriors erased a double-digit deficit and cut Nordhoff’s lead to just six points at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The host team responded by attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line where they made 14 of 19 shots.
Nordhoff’s success at the line allowed them to preserve the victory.
In a bright spot for Carpinteria, 6’2″ center Amy Davis came off the bench and got her first two baskets of the season as she finished with four points and seven rebounds. Davis is a volleyball player who is in her first year of competitive basketball.
The Warriors (7-10) will continue their season on Tuesday at La Reina.
