Presidio Sports releases the Santa Barbara County Super Seven for boys basketball each Monday throughout the league season. It is a way for you to see how our County teams stack up against each other from week to week during the season.
The rankings are not based on a vote, but determined by considering a combination of results, strength of schedule, common opponents, momentum, and a variety of other factors. Because many of these teams play in different leagues and different CIF Divisions based on school size, record alone does not do enough to indicate a team’s strength.
SB COUNTY SUPER SEVEN
1) Righetti Warriors (10-2) — The Warriors just won 3 of 4 games at the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic before losing in the title game to La Costa Canyon. In fact, the Warriors are undefeated against all teams with the exception of La Costa, who beat Righetti for its first loss on December 17. Righetti posted a 20-point victory over Dos Pueblos at home on Dec. 6. The Warriors begin Pac-7 play on January 4 at Arroyo Grande.
2) San Marcos Royals (8-6) — San Marcos has a tournament title under its belt and split its first two Channel League games in December. The Royals started out 8-2 but head into the new year having lost four straight. San Marcos meets Santa Barbara on Wednesday in a key Channel League matchup.
3) Santa Barbara Dons (6-6) — The Dons just wrapped up hosting their own Holiday Classic in JR Richards Gymnasium. Santa Barbara beat Bishop Diego at the Holiday Classic, which came after a win over Buena in the Dons’ Channel League opener on Dec. 16. The Dons performed well at their tournament, finishing with a 3-1 record and a good performance against a tough Ocean View team in the final.
4) St. Joseph Knights (10-4) — The Knights recently went 4-0 at the Las Vegas Invitational after going through a stretch in mid-December in which they lost 4-of-6 games, including a 62-58 loss to San Marcos. St. Joseph and Righetti meet on Friday in a Pac-7 game.
5) Bishop Diego Cardinals (4-9) — The Cardinals retain most of their CIF-ss finalist team from last season, but have struggled out of the gates this season with a tough non-league schedule on top of dealing with a late playoff run by the football team. Several of the Cardinals’ regulars got a late start with the team and are still working their way back in. A early-season loss to Santa Ynez came without several starters in the lineup.
6) Dos Pueblos Chargers (3-8) — The Chargers’ record isn’t a great indicator of their strength as DP has played a tough preseason schedule. The Chargers are coming off four games at the Ventura Kiwanis Tournament where they went 1-3. DP is still trying to find an identity following the loss of their starting center to injury in November.
7) Pioneer Valley Panthers (6-8) — The Panthers, who will compete for a playoff spot in the Pac-7 this season, have wins over Santa Ynez and Santa Maria.
On the Bubble: Cabrillo Conquistadores, Santa Ynez Pirates, Cate Rams, Providence Hall Lions, Carpinteria Warriors, Laguna Blanca Owls
