The defenses prevailed as the San Marcos girls soccer team played Ventura to a 0-0 tie in its second Channel League match of the year.
The Royals lost their league opener to Dos Pueblos, but showed improvement in their defensive third against the Cougars.
Sophomore center back Ashley Carney played an instrumental role in organizing the San Marcos back line and keeping a clean sheet.
Ventura’s back four was also up to the challenge and matched the Royals’ effort.
“I’ll give Ventura credit, their back line really gave us some trouble,” head coach Macie Berlin said.
San Marcos (0-1-1 league) will continue its season with a non-league match on Saturday against Beverly Hills, and will return to Channel League action on Tuesday at Santa Barbara.
