“It was like starting the season over again,” Santa Barbara boys soccer coach Todd Heil said after his team returned to the field after a 14-day break.
Alfredo Ibarra scored two goals to lead the CIF Division 1 fifth-ranked Dons to a 6-1 rout at Buena.
Santa Barbara improves to 14-4-4 and 4-0-1 in league.
Heil said his team was little rusty at the beginning of the match. “It took about 15-20 minutes for the team to get in sync,” he said.
Once the Dons found their grove, there was no stopping them.
Ibarra started the onslaught, scoring off a free kick from Jelan Hutton in the 18th minute. and the finishing a Matt Medina cross six minutes later. Ibarra has 12 goals for the season.
Alberto Hernandez jumped on a loose ball in the box and gave the Dons a 3-0 lead in the 53rd minute.
Tyler Montalvo-Pardo was taken down in the box by the goalkeeper and converted the resulting penalty kick in the 67th minute.
Mario Acevedo and Mauricio Silva tallied the final two goals.
“It was nice to come back and finish as well as we did tonight,” said Heil, whose team plays at San Marcos on Thursday.
