In a dual meet that determined the Channel League Champions, the Dos Pueblos wrestling team was unable to get enough points to beat Ventura.
Each team won seven matches, but the Cougars had more pins and took first place in league with a 34-27 win.
In the match of the night, freshman Cameron Cox wrestled a student who had dropped weight to 113 pounds, and the Ventura wrestler took an early 3-0 lead. Cox refused to quit and got an escape and a takedown late to win by decision.
“He’s just a fighter,” Dos Pueblos head coach Anthony Califano said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that that kid is out there to win.”
While the meet ended in a loss, the Chargers still came away with a lot of positives as they look forward to the postseason.
“We want to be league champions, but I think it will give us momentum,” Califano said.
