The Cate School girls basketball team played an excellent defensive game at Santa Clara, but could not convert enough baskets on the other end of the floor and lost 36-27.
The Rams held Santa Clara scoreless in the third quarter, but only scored two points in the same stretch and were unable to capitalize on opportunites that were created by stellar defense.
Grace Dickman led Cate in scoring with nine points. Erin Griffin had eight points and seven rebounds, and completed her all-around performance by locking down Santa Clara’s best low-post scorer.
The Rams used a 1-2-2 zone and forced the host team to shoot from the outside, which led to shutout third quarter.
Cate came within three points with just two minutes remaining in the game, but could not create enough offense to earn a victory.
The Rams (4-4 overall, 1-0 Condor League) will play next against Providence Hall at the Dunn School.
