Cameron Wagner perfectly timed his run and scored off cross for the go-ahead goal to help Carpinteria defeat Oaks Christian 3-1 in a Tri-Valley League boys soccer game Wednesday night at Memorial Stadium.
The win was the Warriors’ fifth in a row and it avenged a 4-1 defeat against the Lions in the league opener two weeks ago.
“It was nice after a difficult loss to them in the first game,” Carpinteria coach Daniel Torres said. “We didn’t play our best game, but the boys stayed composed.”
After a scoreless first half, the Warriors got on the board on a goal by Omar Vasquez in the 57th minute.
But Oaks Christian responded two minutes later and tied the score.
Carpinteria regained control of the match and worked a nice combination with Edwin Elizarraras and Vasquez in the corner. Vasquez then crossed the ball to Wagner, who put it away.
“He made the right run and timed it perfectly,” Torres said.
Elizarraras scored on penalty kick in the 80th minute to complete the scoring.
“When it was 1-1, we really went after them and got those two goals,” Torres said. “We did the right things at the right time. We didn’t want to tie and go into overtime and it showed with those two goals at the end.”
Carpinteria (10-6, 5-1) is back in action Thursday with a rain make-up match against Santa Paula at home.
