Ricardo Arroyo struck a free kick from 40 yards away and caught the Santa Paula goalkeeper off-guard to give the Carpinteria boys soccer team a 1-0 victory at home.
“We converted the one that was least likely,” head coach Daniel Torres said about his team’s scoring chances.
The Tri-Valley League contest was a hard-fought affair, as Santa Paula kept constant pressure on the Warriors.
The game was scoreless in the first half, but just three minutes after play resumed, Arroyo powered his miraculous shot into the goal.
The Carpinteria defense held firm for the remainder of the game.
“We’re very content with the shutout,” Torres said. “We haven’t had one in a while.”
The Warriors (11-6, 6-1 TVL) will continue their season on Monday at home against Santa Clara.
