Westmont held Point Loma Nazarene to under 50 points as the Warriors posted a 71-47 Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball win on the Sea Lions’ home court
Though the Sea Lions hold a 27-5 series record, the Warriors have won the last four match-ups, dating back to the 2009-10 season.
“I thought we did a good job executing the things that would help us be successful today,” said Westmont head coach Kirsten Moore. “We did a better job defensively of holding them to a low shooting percentage. I thought we made strides on the defensive end of the floor as well as continuing to exploit the o-boards, which we knew was going to be really important today.”
The Warriors (8-1, 2-0) built up a 13-point lead in the first half, but the Sea Lions (6-4, 0-2) narrowed the margin to seven (33-26) by halftime. In the second half, Westmont held Point Loma to just 21 points while scoring 38 of their own. Westmont also won the battle of the boards 42-35, pulling down 14 offensive rebounds in the process.
Lisa Peterson led the Warriors with 14 points and pulled down six rebounds. Tugce Canitez recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Vanessa Farias added 12 points and pilfered the ball three times.
“It was a balanced effort,” said Moore. “Tugce led us with her presence on the board, with another double-double. Katie (Kittle) was doing a great job on the boards. Lisa had a number of o-board put-backs, especially during our run in the second half. Vanessa stepped up and was hitting shots tonight. It was great to get everybody in there and for everybody to contribute.
