Despite a fine defensive performance, the Santa Barbara High boys basketball team was unable to keep Oxnard from earning a 70-56 victory.
The game was the first of the season for the Dons and the first game under new head coach David Bregante.
“Our defense was solid but we just had too many turnovers on offense,” assistant coach Andy Gil said.
Andy Busch led the Dons with 17 points. Sam Cohen, Brendan Fay, and Emilio Gonzalez each had 10 points, and the scoring output kept the Santa Barbara neck-and-neck with Oxnard for most of the game.
“We played them tough through three and let it slip away in the fourth,” Gil said.
Santa Barbara (0-1) will continue its season at Camarillo on Tuesday.
